Festival First Day Cover

Time passed by really fast, before we know it July is coming to an end.  This coming weekend, we can look forward to a longer weekend as coming Monday, our Muslim friends will be celebrating Hari Raya Pausa; another one of the major festivals in Singapore.  In a way, it is timely as I introduce SingPost June’s stamp theme:  Festivals.

Singapore celebrates 4 major holiday:  Lunar New Year celebrated by the Chinese, Hari Raya Adifiltri by the Muslims, Deepavali by the Indians and Christmas Holiday by the Christians.  The Festivals theme uses cute cartoon illustrations  with a pair boy and girl of different ethnic group to represent their respective festivals in a cheery and colourful fashion.

Festivals theme is a recurring theme in SingPost stamp collections.  In 2010, festival stamps were printed using the holographic foil technique to create a spectrum of changing colours.  In 2004, a set of 8 stamps were used with 1st local stamps depicting iconic features of the festivals and 50 cents stamp with dramatic features of different ethnic groups.  In 2008 a group of 12 stamps with colourful elements of each festival and how people celebrate them were printed with 1st local, 2nd local, and 55 cents stamps.  It is also rare that it features the lesser celebrated mid-autumn festival, Pongal, Hari Raya Haji and Easter.

SingPost releases festivals stamps every two years so that those who still send out greeting cards can use these festive stamps to add more cheer to the festival celebration.  The stamp images is as below.  Which year stamps do you like most?  Leave a comment below.
