Dian Xiao Er Signature Herbal Roast Duck

One of our local favourite restaurant Dian Xiao Er has partnered with the Health Promotion Board to provide healthier dishes to fit the need of higher demand for healthier options.  Dian Xiao Er is also amongst the pioneer to switch over to rice bran oil; with multiple benefits such as high in anti-oxidants, Vitamin E and cholesterol-inhibiting compounds such as phytosterol. You would think that healthier option would means less tasting.  This certainly is a myth especially after sampling their many dishes which are still as yummy as it is before.  For instance, their signature Herbal Roast Duck; with either Angelica Herb, Ten Wonder or Wild Ginseng sauce; taste just as good as before.  Now healthier options came in same great taste and is a good news for all.

Dian Xiao Er Fish Maw Soup with SeafoodFish Maw Soup with Seafood

One of the item to order from the menu is the fish maw soup with generous portion of seafood.  I love how thick and starchy the soup is that really warms me up and also prepare my gastric for the meal to come.  The soup is about 260 kcal for small portion.  I am able to know the calorie count because Dian Xiao Er menu will state the individual calories for the items.  This allows one to make informed decision about their choices so that they can choose dishes within their calorie need.

Dian Xiao Er Baby Kai Lan with Salted Fish and LimeBaby Kai Lan with Salted Fish and Lime

Enjoy this baby kai lan at 230 kcal for small portion.  I really enjoyed the slightly citrus touch of lime with the vegetable and some saltiness and crunch from the salted fish making this a rather uplifting dish.

Dian Xiao Er Claypot Braised Sea Cucumber Mushroom and Pork TendonClaypot Braised Sea Cucumber, Mushroom & Pork Tendon

This collagen-laden dish is one of my favourite as the sea cucumber is very well braised to a tender texture.  The pork tendon is soft such that it almost melt in your mouth.  This dish can be paired with stir-fried pea pod tips at $29.90++ (inclusive of 2 white rice) for a Lunch Time Set Offer.  This will be a good combination of Vitamin A,E and K as well as dietary fibre.

Dian Xiao Er Seafood Combo with Assorted VegetablesSeafood Combo with Assorted Vegetables

Another healthy dish is the Seafood Combo with Assorted Vegetables.  At only 210 kcal for a small portion, one can enjoy the generous seafood with some of the perennial favourites such as broccoli, sweet peas, carrots, baby corn and crunchy water chestnuts.

Dian Xiao Er Hong Kong Style Steamed Silver Cod FishHong Kong Styled Steamed Silver Cod Fish

Silver Cod is one of my most favourite fish.  This rendition by Dian Xiao Er by steaming the Silver Cod Fish  “Hong Kong Style” using superior soya sauce that retains the Cod’s natural freshness and sweetness.

Dian Xiao Er Stewed Crocodile Soup with Sweet Almonds and Chuan BeiStewed Crocodile Soup with Sweet Almonds and Chuan Bei

Very few ventured this soup as it has an acquired taste. It is easy to point it to the crocodile meat, but it think it is cordyceps.  If you ever had crocodile meat, it actually taste like chicken, except that it is not as tender as chicken.  I still cringed as I ate it.  At 120 kcal for small portion, it is the soup with the lowest calorie count maybe because the meat is very lean.

Dian Xiao Er Double Boiled Wintermelon w ConpoyDouble Boiled Wintermelon Soup with Conpoy

Dian Xiao Er Double Boiled Chicken SoupDouble Boiled Black Chicken Soup

Both the double boiled soup is good and my preferred choice is the wintermelon with conpoy (130 kcal).  I reckoned it is because the Conpoy natural seafood flavour blends well with the melon.  The black chicken soup (160 kcal) should also be a hit for the ladies as it has benefits of preventing ageing so that they can continue to have a youthful skin.

Fried Seafd Bee Hoon w Fish SauceStir Fried Bee Hoon with Fish Sauce

Another dish that impressed me is this stir fried bee hoon that will surely makes me come back for another serving!
