Symmetry Cafe Outdoor

I have heard a lot about Symmetry, a café by day and restaurant bar at night, located at a heritage district of Kampong Glam.  I’m glad that I finally made it to Symmetry and witness for myself what the rave is all about the place.  On the side of the café-bar is a tall tree that provides much shade to its outdoor seats.  The white washed wall stood in stark contrast the lime green doors.  The festive potted plants adds another dimension to décor the place.  For a moment, I felt being transported to some modernised site in Beijing.  Maybe the cool spring weather lately helped to play a role in creating at atmosphere for me.

Symmetry Cafe Front Door

In the recent IS-Magazine Top Tables: Singapore Restaurant 2014, Symmetry made it into the list for restaurants in Kampong Glam/Little India.  This is certainly an accolade because the reviews are done independently, and keeping with IS-Magazine tradition, they do not accept media invitation nor solicit payment to be included in the guide.

Symmetry Cafe Bar

Just so you may know, Symmetry has been a hype because holding the helms is Abby Lim, a Le Cordon Bleu alumni graduate.  Le Cordon Bleu is a world leading culinary school with campuses in Australia, London, Paris and USA.

Symmetry Cafe & Bar Seats

The exterior and the interior of Symmetry are a sharp contrast.  The outdoor sitting area makes one feel relax and chill, very suitable for an alfresco style coffee (when the sun isn’t too sunny).  However the interior looks more suited to be a bar.  I guess it wears two coats as it needs to serve both purposes.  Reservations are encouraged because it may usually take about 20-30 minutes for a table during a weekend if you are coming for brunch.

Symmetry Cafe Flat WhiteFlat White ($5.50)

I was at Symmetry for a post lunch coffee during the second day of Chinese New Year.  I was so glad a café is open as I was craving for an artisanal coffee from a third wave coffee shop!  It was satisfying to have a cup of coffee, with a bitter strong after taste.

Symmetry Cafe Ice LatteIce Latte ($6.50)

My friend had a ice latte which cost $6.50.  I thought it is pretty expensive for an ice latte.  I wonder the reason why an iced drink cost an additional $1 compared to a hot drink.  My friend felt that the ice latte was good with strong espresso coffee.  Naturally since milk is less so it enhances the strength of the coffee.

Symmetry Cafe Corner

Despite the many sitting area, Symmetry can get pretty crowded as it is a popular choice café and restaurant bar.  I was here 3 times but was turn away by the crowd.  Was particularly upsetting especially when I see many empty tables but the staff were slow to seat the guest.  Maybe this is due to a queuing system which they have in place.  The turnover of the table was also quite slow and appear that the café is short-handed.  I guess they can better improve on their table management.

Symmetry Cafe Outdoor

Symmetry is certainly a café worth visiting.  I am quite certain I would like to come back to try out some of their dishes, albeit looks a little pricey but may be worth the while since they won an accolade from the Top Tables 2014, not surprising since it comes from a Le Cordon Bleu graduate.

Symmetry is in between Bugis and Lavender MRT station and about 10-12 minutes walk from the station.  It is also few streets away from Artistry, a café-bar-gallery at Jalan Pinang.  The Kampong Glam area is also in the making of many indie cafes.  I hope more vibrancy is injected into the area turning it into an upcoming “Tiong Bahru Estate” style with many cafes and shops for an awesome weekend experience.

Great review, thanks for sharing. Makes me want to visit the places too. There is this map called CafeSG that lets you find all the local cafes in Singapore! Super useful for cafe hopping and to find cafes near home and workplace.

Hope to see more reviews from you
