Assembly Coffee Third Wave Coffee – Assembly

Assembly.  I was back in Evans and felt back to school again.  My entire undergraduate days were spent at the beautiful campus at Bukit Timah and each time when I pass by the place, I will be flooded with memories of those good old days where my peers and I will have intellectual debates in classrooms, where we recite Sonnets of Shakespeare, and sharing what we know of famous artists such as Monet and Van Gogh!  Oh, those were the days!

Assembly thus have a special meaning where people get together in a common venue.  Do you remember during our primary school days where we have assembly?  Once a week, we have to wear the school tie and sit on the dirty, cemented floor of the school hall.  It is a more distant past so I can’t really recall what we did, except the rambling of the school principal and teacher.  Once in a while, we will have a skit that is put up by some classes.  I remember putting up a show before.  I was Hansel, the young boy who together with her sister, outwitted a cannibalistic witch.

Assembly Coffee

Large Bench Table

Assembly Coffee is not a place for large gathering though.  Except for a large bench table that sits neatly in the café, the rest of the tables are small are at best good for a small group of 4.  The café is small and can be quite noisy when it gets quiet.  Otherwise it is pleasurable to be sitting in a small café and just letting time goes by.  The Singapore Botanic Gardens is just nearby and is a good idea to have a cuppa before starting or ending a garden visit.

Latte Assembly Coffee Evans LodgeCafé Latte ($4.50)

The coffee here is pretty decent.  I like it when the barista takes care into making each cup of coffee.  My latte is served in a glass cup with nice latte art.  The taste of the coffee is superb with a lingering bitterness that stays a little while before going away.  Actually when I drink a coffee, how the milk is steamed is also just as important because the texture and flavour of the coffee does change the elements of the coffee.  I prefer the really velvety and smooth latte that few places can make.  Assembly is a success!  Assembly uses beans from local roaster Geisha and Liberty.

Assembly Scrambled Egg with Smoked Salmon Scrambled Egg with Smoked Salmon Croissant Sandwich ($14.90)

There are very few menu items at Assembly.  I had a scrambled egg croissant sandwich with smoked salmon.  I will tell you that I love their scrambled eggs very much because it is still moist when served and a little creamy just the way I love.  Won’t say the croissant is the best I’ve eaten, but it was pretty ok.  It is served with atlantic smoke salmon and a side of wild rockets.   I would recommend their scramble eggs.

I wish during my undergraduate days there are third wave coffee places like this to visit.  We were mostly going to the second wave places like Starbucks, Coffee Beans and Spinelli a lot.  If you are keen to know what third wave coffee means, maybe you can click on my BFF site that explains it on the same Assembly Café post.  Despite being visited three times, she never asked me along nor inform me of its existence.  Bo jio!!

Assembly Coffee Store Front

Assembly Coffee is probably a latest addition to the Evans Lodge and is sandwiched between Mr Prata and The Wine Company.  Have you heard of Hatched?  Well, it is located just a few doors from the inaugural outlet of Hatched.  Not convenient to get to, the nearest MRT is Botanic Gardens and you have to walk past the now NUS campus to get to the café.

Reciting sonnets of Shakespeare?!!?? That is like the greatest joke! You are very welcome to visit me at the Botanic Gardens to reminisce the good old days if you miss it so much. Btw Bo Jio because the 3 times I went were occasions when we were nearby, and not deliberate attempts.

Obviously you weren’t the reciting sonnets group. The gossiping one perhaps.
