Tim Ho Wan Grand Opening Bedok Mall Lion Dance

I am very honoured to be invited to Tim Ho Wan Grand Opening for their two new outlets – Bedok Mall and Westgate.  With their entrance into the east and west regions, they have officially conquered the whole heartland of Singapore with ERA Toa Payoh in the North and Plaza Singapura at the heart of the city!

The guests who attended the official opening at Bedok Mall scarified their weekend sleep-in and was up and early at Bedok Mall at 8.45am.  But all were happy faces and feeling festive all prepped for the official ceremony.  So after the blessing of the Lion Dance, and a roar of “Tim-Ho-Wan!”, ribbon is cut by the Chef and owners of Tim Ho Wan.  Hooray to that!

The God of Fortune graced the occasion as well.  The funny Fortune God was around taking photos and waiting on the guests.  I was lucky to be able to get a shot of the Fortune God, which is stashed carefully away. But here is the shot of the God of Fortune.  I am feeling extra festive with the arrival of the fortune God.

At the opening, all the invited guests were treated to the new specials for all the branches at a single location!  How lucky.  I couldn’t wait to be invited to the official opening for Bedok Mall, so I went ahead and try them out two weeks before and reviewed the Bedok Mall/Westgate Specials.  You can read about them here.  I have checked with the PR girls from Brand Cellar, they have confirmed that Tim Ho Wan makes their own Laksa soup and Chilli Crab.  That’s quite a WOW!

There is consistency in the three items they served.  The taste and presentation of the dim sum were the same.  However, the peanuts with the braised chicken was not as spiced as the one we ordered.  The other bloggers that attended felt that the chives (Jade) wanton doesn’t seem to go well with the laksa soup.  My take is that while it localise the flavour, but how the food complement each other is more important factor to contend with.  Chives are more “teochew” while laksa is more “nonya” so maybe the taste just does not blend too well.

PLAZA SINGAPURA January 2014 Specials

Tim Ho Wan Plaza Singapura January 2014 Special Dace Fish Paste Soup with Lettuce Dace Fish Paste Soup with Lettuce ($6)

Tim Ho Wan Plaza Singapura January 2014 Special Steamed Chicken with Fish Maw Steamed Chicken with Fish Maw ($5.50)

The two Plaza Singapura specials were the dace fish paste and steamed chicken with fish maw.  While the dace fish is tasty and has an about right texture, however it is one dish that the invited bloggers at my table did not repeat the order.  Maybe it is something that the “older generation” may prefer.  I reckoned they should have placed this special in a more heartland location as the Plaza Singapura outlet is patronised by more youngster.

My personal favourite for the entire special menu is the steamed chicken with fish maw.  The chicken is tasty and well marinated and steamed well enough to retain the juiciness and tenderness of the chicken.  The marinate seeps into the fish maw below and render a very nice chicken stock flavour.  I loved this so much that I ordered another one for myself.  One whole mushroom accompanied every dish which is smooth and juicy.

TOA PAYOH 2014 Specials

To surprised the guests on a monthly basis, Tim Ho Wan will feature monthly specials at their store.  For January, they have the Crispy Fish Salad Roll and Phoenix City Quail Eggs.  I didn’t quite like the crispy fish roll because there was too much thousand island dressing in the fish that I cannot really taste the fish and it was overwhelmed by the salad dressing.  The Phoenix City Quail Eggs were lovely looking and taste good, just as its pork dumplings with bits of mushrooms and a slice of quail egg on top, sprinkled with black sesame seeds.

Tim Ho Wan Signature BBQ Pork Buns BBQ Pork Buns ($4.50)

Of course, we were all treated to the signature Tim Ho Wan BBQ Pork Buns.  I am not quite a blogger to break up my food to present what’s in it for my readers, with the help and suggestion of other bloggers, here is the BBQ Pork Bun exposed!  For someone with a sweet tooth, I always enjoyed the sweet BBQ pork filling and the sweet crispy crust.  Each time I have this, I felt heavenly.  It is without a doubt the “Heavenly King” of Tim Ho Wan.

Tim Ho Wan Grand Opening Bedok Mall Stroller Friendly Seat

A favourite seat, and the only one that is stroller friendly.  To pack more guests into the restaurants so that more can enjoy the dim sum at the same time and to reduce turnover, they have a spacious area at the cashier area of the restaurant so that guests can deposit their folded stroller.  Baby chairs are also available upon request.

Good news!  I have heard that the waiting time of the queue seems to have greatly reduced.  I have friends who just queued for just about 15 minutes for dinner time at Bedok Mall outlet.  Hope the shorter waiting time do not deter those who rather not spend time in the queue to come and try Tim Ho Wan for the first time.  And for those who wants to try their monthly specials also don’t have to wait in the queue for too long!  That is thanks to Tim Ho Wan for opening more stores so that more people get a chance on their hands on their famed BBQ Pork Buns and other dim sum delights!
