Following the debut at ERA Centre at Toa Payoh, Tim Ho Wan recently opened its 3rd new outlet at Bedok Mall.  Most recently, a 4th store was open at Westgate @ Jurong.  Despite the long queue, there are still many people who actually have never tried Tim Ho Wan.  As Bedok Mall is near where I lived and my friends suggested I go with them, hence we weathered a 45 minutes wait on a Saturday morning (started queuing at 10.15am, stores open at 11am).  But mind you, by the 11am, there was a long winding queue that goes so far my eyes can’t see!

Having already tried the original Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura, I am most keen to try out the special menu Bedok Mall offers to its guests.  In the menu, it is stated as monthly special, I wondered if in the first place this is even sustainable to have new items every month.

Tim Ho Wan Jade Wonton in Laksa Soup Jade Wonton in Laksa Soup ($5)

As the name suggests, the jade wonton is a wonton filled with green leafy vegetables: chives.  The skin is rather thick but very smooth and complement the mildly spicy laksa gravy.  I am not sure if the laksa gravy is done by the chef or used those commercial available gravy as it tasted normal.  There is some bean curd skin (tau pok) and a dash of sambal chilli on top.  It is quite unique dim sum dish that I may not mind ordering again.

Braised Chicken Feet in Abalone Sauce Braised Chicken Feet in Abalone Sauce ($5)

Missing in the item at Bedok Mall is the Chicken Feet in Black Bean sauce.  In replacement, they have this Braised Chicken Feet in Abalone Sauce.  My friend didn’t quite like the braised chicken feet which is harder more chewy.  Not like the type which is soft and mushy with the chicken skin falling off the bone as you chew on it.  While the latter is what I prefer, I didn’t mind this too.  The braised chicken feet also comes with peanuts which has a strong star anise taste.

Tim Ho Wan Yam Dumpling with Chilli Crab Meat Yam Dumpling with Chilli Crab Meat ($5)

Yam Dumpling has always been one of the favourite in my dim sum choice, something they did not have in Plaza Singapura outlet.  And they are clever to use Chilli Crab Meat to prepare this rather delightful dish.  $5 for 3 pieces are rather value for money.  I thought it is better if there is more yam going on the dumpling which may compromise the light and flaky texture of the dumpling, but as a yam lover I won’t mind a thicker crust.  The chilli crab tasted ordinary and again I wondered if they prepared their own chilli crab to make this dim sum dish.

For the review of other dim sum dishes, you can refer my earlier post of Tim Ho Wan @ Plaza Singapura.

Patron will have to continually queue to try out the dim sum at Tim Ho Wan.  But as they are more geographically diversified having an outlet each in the north, east and west – the queuing time should be considerably shorter.  Avoid the peak lunch and dinner time crowd, should be able to cut the queue time to about 30 minutes or so.

We had quite a negative experience at the Bedok Mall outlet.  We ordered the Vermicelli Roll with Beef which is the last item to arrived (40 minutes after we were seated and ordered).  Turn out they gave us the pork liver version instead.  The service staff was rather apologetic on the mix-up of the order and offered to give us a new one instead.  After a 10 minutes wait, another vermicelli roll arrived.  And what really amazed us is – they served us the pork liver version again!  I think my friend swore never to go to Tim Ho Wan again!

While the service staff are courteous and friendly, however they seem to be a little short of staff and didn’t pay much attention to service.  Tea was not refilled and our plates were not changed even though they are filled with food debris and the chicken feet bone.  Was kind of disappointed as the price that we paid were quite similar to what many other renowned dim sum restaurants charges.  With ordinary taste of dim sum and lack of service, I would say forget about the long queue.
