DBS Marina Regatta

Seems like many bank has its own landmark sports event these days. Standard Chartered hosts the Singapore Marathon, OCBC hosts its annual cycling event and DBS now has the Marina Regatta which is an international dragonboat race right at its doorstep at Marina Waterfront Promenade.

Marina Bay Financial District

The local and international teams all congregate near the Marina Bay Financial District (MBFC) where they paddled hard at the marina bay waters, against the backdrop of the new skyline of Singapore’s financial district.  This also allows Singapore to show case the area to the world of its stellar economic success.  Something I am personally proud of as Singaporean.  It was not too long ago that the entire area was just reclaimed land.

DBS Marina Regatta

After 12 years of hiatus, DBS brought the international dragon boat competition back to scene again last year.  In its second year running, the DBS Marina Regatta is Singapore’s biggest water sports festival which attracts close to 100 international and local teams to compete in the race against the backdrop of the pristine financial district.

DBS Marina Regatta

What do you expect to see in a dragon boat race?  Hunky guys of course.  There were many teams competing these days and each has a tentage so you can really go ogle at them one tentage at a time.  But the weather when I went on Sunday was really sweltering hot so most of them are just lazing under the shades.  I was too shy to take a frontal shot but took this picture nonetheless because I love the chinese character of dragon on the singlet.

DBS Women

Besides the hunky men, we have the iron ladies in the midst.  Check out the winning ladies team from DBS doing some stretching here.  Nowadays, dragonboat races are not only men’s showing but it also display the poweress of women.

???????????????????????????????

The dragon boats docked and ready to get into some action.  Loving the vibrant colors of the dragon boats.  I am not very familiar with the dragon boat rules and guidelines but it seems pretty boring to me that all the dragonboat look so homogenous.  Wouldn’t it be better if the dragon boat can be customised to display the character of each team.  This will add a new dimension to the competition.  Just like the F1 races where all the cars are different.  Maybe each team can also have sponsors which I am sure can attract and retain some good talents to train in dragon boat races.  My personal observation is I didn’t really see any sponsors.  I wonder how much it cost DBS to finance such a huge water sports event.

Gearing Up

Some teams gearing up getting ready for some paddling action.  Unlike other sporting events like the marathons which attracts throngs of participants and the OCBC Cycle event which is gaining more popularity, dragon boat races have less mass appeal.  Dragon boating is definitely not a convenient sports because you need a team of people to train together and to compete seriously will require a lot of training and hard work.  I have many friends who used to be in these teams but very soon a lot dropped out because the committment is just to great.  But well, I was still very encouraged to see many people with great passion for this sports.  DBS has certainly chosen a sporting event in tune with its Asian-centric values.  I hope with DBS Marina Regatta more people will find interest and preserve in dragon boating.

One of the team crossing the finishing line.  The rowing action is too far away from the spectator grandstand and I didn’t have a good zoom camera to show the rowing action.  Also towards the end of the day, the weather just eats into me so didn’t move to capture a better shot.

But next year at the 3rd DBS Marina Regatta, I hope to capture more fascinating shot.  Dragon Boating is about power, strength, speed, mental focus,  teamwork, endurance and skill.  Will learn to capture these intangible elements in photography.

The Bay Festival will continue this weekend on 24 & 25 May.  There will be public dragon boating and kayaking sessions, social enterprise carnival with art & craft, roving circus act, F&B, games, etc.  and also drum challenge finals (on 24 May, Friday) and concerts featuring local talents such as The Ferdinands, Jessica Soo, Jack & Rai, and Electrico (on 25 May, Saturday).  For more information on the Bay Festival, visit DBS Marina Regatta website.   Just remember to bring sunblock, sunglasses and a cap along!
