Lucky-7 Things To Do this Festive Chinese New Year February 11, 2013

Posted by gurkhason in life, singapore.

Chinese New Year is indeed a very celebratory and joyous occasion. While many Chinese are busy visiting relatives and friends, there are many other people who may be caught unaware that most stores are closed during this period. There may also be those who are not visiting, or are done with visiting. A long weeknd like this can be quite boring to be coped up at home. So here are 7 things you can do this Chinese New Year until its back-to-work or back-to-school.

Not the best way to beat the crowd, but definitely the way to kill some time. Catching up in a few movies during this period is worth the time and dime. During this period, usually the Academy Award and Oscars nominations will be screened. You will guarantee be able to participate in the conversations when people are discussing the movie or stars. Well, if all else fails there is still the Ah Boys to Men Part 2, directed by Jack Neo, our homegrown variety show compère turn comedian turn actor and producer. He wants to rake in $7 million box office sales for this recent debut. Let support local production and make it a stunning success.

Candy CrushPlay Candy Crash
Candy Crash is one of the latest mobile game that is highly addictive! Many of my friends and colleagues are on this game multiple times a day. It’s basically like Bejeweled but required some thinking skills, and luck! If you have not downloaded it from the Apple apps store or Android Play, you should do it. If you log in to play using Facebook, you can even see your friends progress and compete to see who’s at a higher level.

???????????????????????????????Visit the Gardens by the Bay
How about an idyllic walk at Gardens by the Bay? One of the best place to soak into the Chinese New Year atmosphere with huge potted tangerines plants and red Chinese lanterns around the garden. Visit the flower dome, which is one of the spectacular cooled conservatories, the flower field currently displayed a Chinese Spring Celebrations of full flower blossom. If you have visited before, do explore the new Kingfisher Lake and Satay by the Bay. From there you can also walk to the Marina Barrage and take in the breathtaking view of the Marina Bay frontage.

BookRead a book
How about having some “me-time” and been engrossed in a book. If you are short of ideas, you can check out Time’s list of 100 best novels or for a shorter list, refer to The New York Times “The 10 Best Books of 2012“. Another source of my inspiration for novels to read will be from Man Booker or Pulitzer Award nominees and winners. As a start, why not consider some award winning titles such as. Whether you choose a fiction or non-fiction, reading a book will certainly enrich and nourish your mind. In fact it is my favourite past time. You can also refer to my reading list shown here.

SEA-AquariumVisit Marine Life Park
The Marine Life Park is one of the latest attraction in Singapore, housed in Resort World Sentosa, it features two new attractions: the SEA Aquarium and Adventure Cove Park. Be WOWed by the diverse marine life in the SEA aquarium. Particularly if you have young children in tow, it should provide an enriching edutainment.

There is still time for a short island getaway to the either Bintan or Batam. Especially so for companies that have a longer mandatory leave on top of the public holiday schedule. There are several local companies that pick auspicious days to start their business. I know of some that only starts after the 5th day of the new year. So it’s time for some chill out time. I have written about Turi Beach Resort at Batam, check out the blog entry here.

TreadmillHit the gym
Research has shown that at least 90% of the people who set a new year resolution wants to lose weight, keep fit or lead a healthy lifestyle. But many remain unresolved for several years. I reckon I’m probably a testament to this. Since it is only mid-Feb, it’s not too late start. “Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what gets you going.” Most gym are open through the new year. If you do not have a gym membership and contemplating to get one, there is no better time then now. And start burning the calories from the consumption of the new year goodies, and the residue from Christmas if its not burned yet!

Hope everyone have a good celebration and good time by yourself or with your family, friends and loved ones.
