It’s New Year Day and what’s a better way to spend the new year day with my good friends for brunch. After a little research on the web, decided to head out to Barracks Cafe @ Dempsey.

We went without a reservation; which was a bad idea, but good thing is there is a table for us as it is still early, but we can only have the table for up to 1pm. I like the set up of the place which makes the place looks very cosy as there are different furniture pieces in the cafe, so it doesn’t look like a production house. The elongated room is also brightly lit by the side wall which are all glass that face out the green fields outside which makes the place look very serene.

I ordered Asparagus and Poached Eggs ($18) with fresh green asparagus, brioche croutons and bearnaise sauce.  It is topped with freshly chopped tarragon and wild rockets.  Wild rockets are my favourite salad veggie and there is a generous portion of it.  The poached eggs were very lovely, one of the best I had that is just nicely runny for the yolk.  The gooey yolk is a good dip with the croutons.

My friends ordered Barracks Free Form Eggs ($21), Scambled style.  It comes with Chipolata sausages, rose tomatoes and mushroom ragout.  I have some of the tomatoes which are juicy.

Another friend ordered the same Barrack Free Form Eggs but poached style.  While my order tasted ok but we perceived it as too dry but the runny egg yolk goes well with the cr0utons and asparagus.  But I must say for $3 more, theirs looks more worth it as it comes with bread, sausages and tomatoes!  I probably go for that choice the next time I visit Barracks Cafe again.

We also ordered 7-layer Pancake ($18) to share.  The pancake is smeared with nutella, and chocked full of green raisins, dried apricots, and assortment of nuts (hazelnuts, almonds, walnut, pistachos, etc.) and fruits (raspberry, blue berries, strawberries, etc.) with maple syrup at the side.  I quite enjoy the pancake but my friends found it a little tough; probably not fluffy.  But I am delighted with the nuts and fruits – makes it look like a healthy brunch choice.

I love the Dempsey area actually especially in the morning as it gave an away from the buzz feeling.  The surrouding area is very quiet and peaceful and very green, a stark contrast of the concrete urban space we come everyday.  A taxi ride from Orchard doesn’t cost that much anyway!

Glad to have come to Barracks, our first brunch place for 2013.  We are planning for more regular brunch bites and hope the next time we have more of our friends to join us.

Happy 2013 everyone!
